麻豆视频 Student Spotlight: Garrett Hansen

We sat down with 麻豆视频 graduate Garrett Hansen to ask him about his experience in the Combination Welding Technology program. Originally from Brewster, New York, Garrett currently lives in Brooklyn. Before pursuing a welding job, Garrett was a manager at a daycare for dogs.

Working Part-Time While Attending Classes

For Garrett, it was important to enroll in a trade program with class times during the day. 麻豆视频 offers both day and evening classes.

鈥淚 came to 麻豆视频 for my classes from 8 am鈥2 pm,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hen I worked at my part-time job from 3 pm鈥8 pm. It was tough but worth it.鈥

Garrett鈥檚 goal was to complete his courses as soon as possible, so he could graduate and start working in the welding field. Unlike traditional four-year universities and two-year community colleges, 麻豆视频鈥檚 programs can be completed in as little as 7 months.

鈥淚 moved through the welding program at my own pace and graduated in June 2022,鈥 he said.

Hands-On Motivation

Several elements about trade school kept Garrett motivated in the welding program. Most importantly, pursuing a trade gave Garrett the opportunity to be hands-on in the shop.

鈥淚 can鈥檛 sit behind a desk,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 need to be moving around.鈥

Garret knew that 麻豆视频 offers an established welding program that could put him in a position to open doors to new opportunities.

鈥淲hat led me to 麻豆视频 was the welding program,鈥 he said. 鈥淲elding is a good, stable career, and it鈥檚 something I enjoy doing. I also had a friend who graduated from 麻豆视频 who got a job welding.鈥

Rewarding Experiences

Garrett had a positive experience at 麻豆视频鈥攆rom interacting with instructors and staff to learning alongside other welding students.

鈥淚nstructors are helpful and the staff is great,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 feel the welding program is set up for us to be successful. I learned the skills required to become a great welder. I asked constant welding questions and got constant help. I had a good experience because welding is both challenging and rewarding. It is what you make of it.鈥

Tools of the Trade

Students like Garrett get to practice with real tools of the trade in a shop setting to get them ready for what it鈥檚 like to enter the field after completing their program.

鈥淚 felt supported by always having a place to learn with the resources I needed to succeed in welding,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 enjoyed learning the welding lingo during theory, then I got into the shop and we would do what we talked about.鈥

When asked about his favorite welding processes and equipment, Garrett didn鈥檛 hesitate.

鈥淢y favorite process is stick welding,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 something about the flux and feeding rod that makes me happy. My favorite piece of equipment is the cutting torch. It blasts through metal鈥攖hat makes me excited. It鈥檚 thrilling!鈥

Challenges and Achievements

Sometimes students face milestones they never could have imagined. Looking back on his time in the welding program, Garrett remembers important moments.

鈥淢y biggest challenge was learning to be patient and understand that I鈥檓 learning,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 had to learn that I can鈥檛 get everything perfect on the first try. I鈥檓 most proud of coming to 麻豆视频 every day and getting everything done at a good pace.鈥

Garrett also learned that his sense of satisfaction wasn鈥檛 achieved alone.

鈥淥ne of my greatest achievements was being able to teach other students how to do things,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t gave me reassurance that I was learning it myself.鈥

Garrett also balanced coursework by not allowing himself to fall behind.

鈥淚 did everything right so I could quickly move on the next project,鈥 he said. 鈥淔or example, the night before a quiz, I made sure I studied.鈥
